Newer Garmin products, such as the Oregon, Montana, GPSMAP 62/64 Series, store your GPS data in the mass storage directory of the device. This provides a better user experience when utilizing the device with a computer.

If attempting to permanently delete waypoints, routes, tracks, or other GPS data, you may need to delete the associated GPX file from the device.

To delete* GPX files from your mass storage device on a PC:

  1. Plug device into a computer
  2. Click Window’s Start button
  3. Double-Click (My) Computer
  4. Double-Click Garmin device drive
  5. Double-Click Garmin folder
  6. Double-Click GPX folder
  7. Select file(s) you wish to delete
  8. Press Delete on the keyboard
  9. Confirm that selected file(s) wish to be deleted
  10. Complete steps 2 and 3 again
  11. Right-Click on the Garmin device drive
  12. Select Eject
  13. Unplug the device from the computer

N.B Newer generation devices as well as recording .gpx files also record .fit activity files to sync with the Garmin Connect or Explore App, to delete these files within the Gamrin folder goto the Activities folder where you will see the .fit files


To delete* GPX files from your mass storage device on a MAC:

  1. Plug device into a computer
  2. Navigate to Desktop
  3. Double-Click Garmin device drive
  4. Click Garmin folder
  5. Click GPX folder
  6. Select file(s) you wish to delete
  7. Drag file(s) you wish to delete to Trash
  8. Click on Trash
  9. Click Finder
  10. Click Empty Trash
  11. Confirm you wish to permanently remove these items
  12. Drag Garmin device drive to Trash
  13. Unplug the device from the computer

N.B Newer generation devices as well as recording .gpx files also record .fit activity files to sync with the Garmin Connect or Explore App, to delete these files within the Gamrin folder goto the Activities folder where you will see the .fit files


Your mass storage device will no longer display the data you have deleted.

* NOTE: Use CAUTION when deleting. Do NOT delete unknown files outside of the GPX  / Activities Folders; deleting the wrong files from your mass storage device can cause device failure.
