A check disk is run to ensure the integrity of the files on a device. To run a check disk:

PC:

  1. Connect the device to the computer
  2. Press the Windows key +  E
  3. Locate the Garmin device and see what drive letter Windows assigned to the device
  4. Press the Windows key + R
  5. Type cmd
  6. Click OK
  7. Type chkdsk x: /f (Where 'x' is the drive letter assigned by Windows)

Check disk will now run on the Garmin device1.  

After the check disk is complete, the hidden files and folders need to be visible in order to find and remove any corrupted files that may have been found by the check disk. To show hidden files and folders, see Related Content.

If corrupted data was found on the device, it may have been stored in a new folder named "found.xxx" (where 'xxx' is a number). If any of these folders are present, select and delete them.

Mac:

  1. Connect the device to the computer
  2. Click Finder
  3. Click Applications
  4. Double-Click the Utilities folder
  5. Double-Click Disk Utility
  6. Select the Garmin drive
  7. Click First Aid
  8. Click Repair Disk

    • If the Repair Disk button is inactiveclick Verify Disk first

The check disk is complete, and the device should be free from corruption.

The type of the filesystem is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.
